The hot topic of most parenting boards that I’ve frequented is potty training. Everybody has their own views, their suggestions and sometimes even their critiques.

My daughter was potty trained right after her second birthday and the whole process took one whole weekend. It was easy peasy, nothing to it. She was potty trained even at night. I had no idea potty training was that easy.

It’s not. That was a total fluke. Or maybe it’s just boys are hardheaded which leads me to my experiences potty training my boys.

I couldn’t and I didn’t. I know it sounds ridiculous and probably makes me sound like a horrible mother, but I tried everything in the book – to no avail. No matter what I did for them, I could not get them potty trained. I gave up and just figured that surely the other kids making fun of them in kindergarten would do the job but thankfully it didn’t have to go that far.

When my oldest son was three and I had totally given up, my then only 2 children stayed the weekend with my parents. When they came back on Sunday, I couldn’t believe that just 2 days with Nana and my little guy was potty trained. 2 days! I’d been trying for months to get that kid to go in the toilet and he’s gone for 2 days and he comes back potty trained.
I was and still am totally thankful that somehow my mom got through to him.

So, the last few months I’ve been trying to potty train my youngest son and once again I’ve had absolutely no luck. No matter what I did, he just didn’t get it. We tried the shoot and aim method with Cheerios and Goldfish but that didn’t work. I tried a reward chart but that didn’t work. I tried time outs for accidents but that didn’t work. I tried bribing with candy but that didn’t work either. Once again, nothing worked! Here I was already a failure with my first son and now I was failing with my second son.

Two weeks ago the husband and I decided to take a weekend away and sent all the children to Nana’s house. Can you believe that when we picked the children up on Sunday that my youngest was potty trained? Again, just 2 days with Nana and he came back potty trained.
This all got me thinking. What if all it takes is someone else doing the training. My children always act so much better around others than they do with me. I’m pretty sure my children aren’t the only ones because I’ve heard it before especially after watching someone else’s child.

Maybe it’s the change of scenery or just taking them out of their comfort zone that sparks something inside of them. I honestly don’t know but I wish I did. I know there are thousands of parents struggling right now with potty training. It’s a very aggravating and emotional time for both the parents and the children.

So, I guess I mention all of this to say – try something out of the ordinary. If you have a family member or friend that is willing to help, take them up on it. I’m truly amazed at how my two boys went from using 5-6 diapers a day, to only needing a diaper at night in just 2 days.

Formula Feeding Does Not Mean More Sleep for Mothers

The debate of breastfeeding vs. formula has always been a hot topic among mothers.

Breastfeeding advocates insist that going all natural produces healthier children as babies receive better nutrients and develop antibodies against illness, not to mention helps mothers get their pre-pregnancy bodies back much sooner. But when reaching for a bottle is less time consuming and more publically acceptable, the perks of formula can't be ignored. Soon-to-be mothers now may have to consider another factor when it comes to making a decision on a feeding method for their new bundle of joy. The argument that using formula allows mothers to catch more z's than breastfeeding might now have some holes in it.

Contrary to popular belief, mothers who breastfeed do not receive less or worse sleep than mothers who choose to use formula, according a study recently published in Pediatrics, Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study evaluated maternal actigraphically measured sleep, subjective sleep reports, and daytime functioning, as well as their relation with the feeding method status during postpartum weeks two through 12. The outcomes were objectively measured total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and sleep fragmentation, along with subjectively reported numbers of nocturnal awakenings, total nocturnal wake time, and sleep quality. Sleepiness and fatigue was determined using the Stanford Sleepiness Scale, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, or the fatigue visual analog scale.

It found that there was no difference in sleep quality or quantity between women who were exclusively formula feeding, exclusively breastfeeding, or combining both feeding methods. The study concludes that when encouraging women to choose the breastfeeding method, the information that formula feeding does not necessarily mean improved sleep should be included. When it comes to not breastfeeding, the risks should be compared to the lack of evidence that formula feeding benefits maternal sleep.

StorkCraft Gliders - A Hidden Pleasure In Plain Sight

You know I have noticed something about StorkCraft Gliders, they are a hidden pleasure in plain sight. Let me explain what I mean. You ever notice how you don't notice something until you have one?

Like for example buying a new car... did you ever notice when you bought a new car all the sudden that same color, same model, same year now seem's like it is every where? You never noticed it before, in fact that's why you bought that color or model because not everyone had one or so you thought. But yet there it is, every where you turn. Now I might be getting a little carried away but I think you know what I mean. It doesn't have to be a new car it could be anything... bicycle, clothes, shoes even a StorkCraft Glider.

My wife's family lives a couple of hours away from us. We visit with them a couple of time's a year... more if we can. On a recent visit to my in-laws and the few that call themselves outlaws (every family has them) I noticed something that I NEVER noticed before in the 20 years I have visited. Like at my mother in-laws house... sitting there in plain sight is a StorkCraft Glider.
I make my self look stupid and ask my wife, "When did your mom get a glider?"
My wife with this puzzled look on her face replies, "Been there forever"... then she says, "maybe not the exact same one, but there always has been a rocker there. You have sat in a few hundred times. You feeling okay?"

I tell her, "I'm fine... just never paid that much attention to it."
She just looks at me like you sure your okay, shakes her head and walks away. I over hear her tell her mother in the kitchen what I said and that her old man is losing it. I decide it might be best to let it be.

During our visit we make the rounds to the different siblings house's and this is something I NEVER EVER noticed. Being to think my wife might be right I am losing it. There sitting in plain sight again in every home and we were in four different one's... is a StorkCraft Glider. Again been there for years and I just never really noticed.
Maybe you have one maybe you don't! All I know is there's a reason why they all have one...

StorkCraft Gliders are a hidden pleasure that sits in plain sight.
Life has so my complications. Sometimes you just take a simple pleasure for granted. Like a StorkCraft Glider for example.

A Brand New Life by Lauren Jimeson

A couple months before having my daughter, my husband started apply to jobs. Not that he wasn't happy at his current one, he just wanted to see if he could get a better position somewhere else (not thinking that he would actually get it.) Two weeks before I went into labor my husband went up to NYC for an interview with a potential company. We lived in Tampa at the time and I didn't think much of it. Why would my husband want to move us all the way to NYC when we have a baby coming in two weeks? We just painted her nursery and got our house prepared for her homecoming. The day I went into labor my husband gets a call from the company offering him the position. Surprise! Not only is my life going to change dramatically because I am about to be responsible for another person, but I'm moving 1100 miles away to a city that it completely foreign to me.

I was a teacher and had just started the school year before having my daughter. I told my husband before, that if he did get this job I wanted to stay in Tampa to finish the school year. I had a responsibility to my school and I loved my job. The one downside of that was that my husband had to be up in NYC in one month. Sticking to that decision, I stayed in Tampa with my newborn daughter to finish out my teaching position, while my husband went up to NYC.

When I originally decided to stay in Tampa, I didn't know the difficulties of parenthood. I had no clue that the first couple months are TOUGH! Why doesn't anyone tell you the truth about the first couple months BEFORE having a baby? Not that it would have changed my decision on having one. I just think I would have gone into this a little more level headed then with rose colored glasses on. Having a baby is even tougher when you don't have your spouse there to help you in the middle of the night to feed her or change a diaper. There is no one there to rock her back and forth during the witching hour.

In those nine months that my daughter and I lived in Tampa without my husband (he would come home on weekends when he could), I gained an enormous amount of respect for single moms and working moms. I would come home from work and immediately start to get things ready for the next day. I had to wash bottles, feed her, get her bathed, play with her, get her to bed, and at some point find some time for me to eat and take a shower.

Looking back on that time, even now that I am with my husband in NYC, I wouldn't have changed my decision for anything. My daughter and I have an amazing relationship and I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I am capable of doing a lot more than I ever thought that I could do. I became much more independent and self sufficient. There were many tears along the way, but they were all worth it. I feel like I can do anything now! Even conquer this new city we are now living in.

Now that one adventure has ended, a new one had begun. I am now a stay at home mom trying to make it in this huge city with my daughter!

Stork Craft is launching a Create Your Own program for its glider rockers, offering 63 different combinations in its Hoop Glider & Ottoman collection, and six wood finishes and four fabric combinations for its Tuscany Glider & Ottoman collection.
With no increase in price point for the customization, the Hoop Glider & Ottoman combo will retail for around $199; the Tuscany combo for $250.
Stork Craft also announced the opening of new regional distribution centers in Dallas, Texas; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Northern New Jersey, which will warehouse all the Stork Craft brands, beginning with Ragazzi, Status, and Canwood. Shipments will commence this month, and there are plans to include distribution centers in the Midwest and Northeast.
"Our goal is to construct distribution points which will provide our dealer network with outstanding timely customer service and quality products that they can be proud to sell and represent," said Jim Moore, president and CEO.

Make Every Night A Safe Night

September is Baby Safety Month, sponsored annually by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). This September, JPMA is helping educate parents and caregivers on the importance of creating a safe sleep environment from naptime to nighttime.

Each year hundreds of deaths occur when children are placed in a sleep environment that is not specifically designed for children. The safest place for a baby or child is in a fully functional, properly assembled, JPMA Certified crib, cradle, bassinet, portable play yard, or toddler bed.

Lately i've been getting quite a few questions about Stork Craft and Canwood products, so I thought it'd be easier to answer them all in a new post. Feel free to ask more questions in this post and I will be sure to respond. Here are your questions answered:

1) Are the caribou bunk beds going to be available to buy again?

Yes, the Stork Craft Caribou Bunk Beds will be back in stock online towards the end of July/early August.

2) Adam, I purchased the Canwood Whistler Junior Loft Bed in Cherry from Bedroom Furniture.com (www.csnstores.com) June 23rd and was made aware that the bed was back-ordered until July 19th, just short of a month wait time. After reading the previous response regarding the availability at walmart.com/toysrus.com, is the date the same for other retail outlets?

Movie Review: Toy Story 3 (3D)

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a sportsaholic. Anything sports related on TV I watch, and any local sports event I'm there. But when it comes to movies, I can't say I'm anywhere near the same way. Going to the theatre to see Toy Story 3 in 3D wasn't my typical viewing pleasure, but I have to tell you that this movie, in my mind, is a must see. Without giving away too many details, this is an animated movie about the life of toys who are no longer played with because their owner went away to university. The 3D version of the movie really makes the characters come to life and jump out at you on the big screen. If you have seen the first two Toy Stories, you will be familiar with the main characters such as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang. Toy Story 3 has some new characters and plot twists that are fun for both kids and adults.

For someone who isn't the biggest movie fan, I say that this was one of my favourite movies that I've seen in a long time. It was witty, funny, cute and highly entertaining. It also wasn't super long (which I find that many animated movies are these days).

I give it 4.5/5 stars and recommend that you see it while it's still in theatres!

World Cup fever at Stork Craft!

Even though the Canadian national soccer team did not qualify for the World Cup, we still have many soccer fans within the Stork Craft office. Loyalties are divided:

-USA is naturally a popular choice within our US office as well as our VP of Sales & Marketing Dan, though he can't be that big of a fan if I just had to inform him that the US scored in injury time to advance to the round of 16 :)

-Portugal is the team of choice in our warehouse, as we have a few people of Portugese descent. This is also Taylor's team of choice because he really likes Nando's Portugese flame-grilled chicken.

-Brazil is Debbie, Jorge, Carolina and Melissa's favourite team and is always a safe bet to advance far in the World Cup.

-Mexico is my team of choice as I've had several relaxing warm weather vacations there

It's really amazing how quickly newborns grow both physically and mentally. I've been able to watch my niece Kacey mature quite a bit physically in her first 8 weeks. I've noticed her get taller and put on some cute baby fat. She's now allllllllllllllllmost fitting into her onesies. Her appetite has grown considerably. She's starting to down bottles like it's nobody's business. Lots of milky burps. Even mentally she is much more aware. Her eyes are open more, and she loves staring into the lights. She's always looking all over the place, a very curious girl! I'm really looking forward to the coming months and seeing her grow even more.

"Harnessing the Power of Digital Mums"

Last night at the Opus Hotel in downtown Vancouver, myself and 30 mum bloggers gathered together to meet one another and discuss the relationships between bloggers and marketing/pr firms. I came in with a different perspective than most of the people there, as I was representing the Stork Craft brand, which is why this event was so intriguing to me. I wanted to hear what moms had to say about their own personal blogs, their reasons for having the blog, their values, the importance of their followers, and how they would like to be treated by companies seeking product reviews.

What was great about last night was the openness of the discussion. There was a panel of 5 very insightful women, and everyone in the room was encouraged to speak up, ask questions and give their opinion on some very controversial topics. I sat and listened to various perspectives before I piped up myself and joined the conversation. Again, I felt like I had a unique take on mom bloggers and some different experiences with them that I could draw upon.

I was asked what type of mom blogger was ideal to work with, and truthfully any of the mothers I met last night would have fit the bill. I was impressed with the candidness, integrity and passion that these women had for their blogs. I definitely learned a ton last night, and wanted to thank everyone involved with organizing the event, specifically Jeanette from Limelite PR.

My first experience with a crying baby

I went over to my sister's place last night to visit my 6 week old niece Kacey. She was lying in her bassinet swinging back and forth and seemingly happy. Instead of leaving her be, I became a selfish uncle and wanted to pick her up and hold her. So i put her in my arms, started rocking her back and forth and I could see her face scrunching. I think she was realizing that I was not her mom or dad and that must have upset her, because the tears started streaming down her face! My sister told me that it could have been because she was hungry, so I'm hoping that it was for that reason and not something personal against me :p

This was my first challenging experience with Kacey and this gave me a very small taste as to what parents with babies have to go through each and every day (and hour). I certainly have a new-found respect for new parents.

Getting baby to sleep in crib

Getting your baby to sleep in a crib during the first few months can be both frustrating and challenging. The reality is that every baby has different tendencies and needs, most of which take time to get used to (for both the baby and the parents).

I recently sat down with my sister Haley, who has a 4 week old baby girl named Kacey. I was interested in her perspective as a first-time mother and if she had any successful tips to give other moms trying to get their newborns comfortable sleeping in a crib. This is what she had to say:

For many reasons, it is common for parents to put their baby next to their bed in a bassinet to sleep for the first few weeks or months of the baby's life. This is what we are currently doing with our four week old baby, however during the day when she goes for short naps, we put her in her beautiful nursery to sleep in her 'Status' crib. This way, we know that when we are ready to transition her to sleeping in her own room, she will have no problems sleeping in her crib. We have friends who's babies have had very difficult times making the switch to sleeping in their cribs after never having been in a crib for the first three or more months of their lives. We believe we are preventing that sort of struggle from happening to us in the future, as she is able to sleep happily in her crib already.

The interest in Canwood is huge, as can be seen from sales and number of inquiries about Canwood products. I'm not surprised, as we just did a photoshoot here and I had the opportunity to see some Canwood in person: it is beautiful, high quality pine furniture priced very reasonably. The joys of being a first-time Uncle

For months and months, my whole family was waiting in anticipation for my sister Haley's first baby. I was excited, but I didn't really know what to expect. It was hard for me to imagine what a new baby in the family would be like, as we haven't had one in our immediate family since my brother was born in 1990. Uncle Adam had a nice ring to it, but what kind of uncle would I be to Kacey? While many of these questions are still unanswered, I must say that the first 10 days of me being an uncle have been both proud and exciting for me. My sister and her husband have invited me over to see Kacey and I've jumped at every chance to hold her. At first I was pretty nervous to go anywhere near her as she is so tiny and delicate, but I think I'm much better now.

I want Kacey to think of me as a cool, fun, caring uncle to her. Although she probably won't remember these last 10 days with me, I know that I will never forget them.

Yesterday morning I had the privilege of meeting my brand new baby niece, Kacey Skye. She was born the morning of April 20th a healthy 6 lbs, 15 ounces. This is my sister's first ever child and my parents first ever grandchild, so she is sure to be a spoiled little girl! Uncle Adam got to hold her yesterday and she started crying, but maybe one day she'll learn to like him :)

This past Friday we had a draw to win a Team Canada hockey jersey. Who am I?

Corporate Blogs tend to remain just that, corporate. It is about companies pushing products to their followers, which is really just another way of advertising. Since I started this blog in the summer of 2009, I wasn't entirely sure which direction to go in. Should I update our customers on upcoming products, have contest giveaways, highlight community involvement or get personal (meet the people of Stork Craft)? I started out just talking about our products and noticed very few people reading this blog. After a few months of blogging and having only 4 followers (one of them was my Mom, thanks Mom!) I decided to change it up. Gone were the flavorless, corporate posts that could have been read on our website or any advertisement, and in were the more colorful, interactive posts about winning prizes and meeting the employees.

I'm very fortunate to have the freedom to post about whatever is on my mind. I am not pigeon-holed into pushing company strategies and agendas on this blog. What I am encouraged to do is showcase my creativity and writing skills and encourage healthy conversation and dialogue. I hope that over the last number of months you have enjoyed reading all sorts of different articles. I try to freshen and mix things up every once in a while.

So I figured this would be a good time to get to know me, Adam Segal, the creator of this blog. My position at Stork Craft is officially titled 'Manager, E-Marketing & Social Media'. What this means is I oversee and manage all of the social media outlets that Stork Craft is tied to (Blog, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin). I need to drive traffic to these pages but I also thoroughly enjoy interacting with our customers (and potential customers). Who would've thought that a 25 year old male would be interacting with Moms on Twitter throughout the day? Not I.

A little bit about me: I am one of four children in my family, and all of us grew up in Vancouver, Canada. I did my Honors Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Ontario in Sociology. I graduated on-time and had no idea what to do, applied for an internship to work on Parliament Hill for the Canadian Government and was accepted. I was the only representative of British Columbia and one of eight chosen in Canada. After a year of working as a fresh-faced 21 year old for the Deputy House Leader to the Prime Minister, I decided that Ottawa was far too cold for my West-Coast blood so I came back home to Vancouver.

Upon my return I got my Tennis Canada Certification and taught children for the summer. Running my own tennis lessons was fun, but this wasn't a realistic full-year job for me. I then joined the Stork Craft team as Assistant Logistics and Warehouse Coordinator, and worked in that position for a year until I decided to go back to school. I attended the University of British Columbia and received my Masters of Management Degree. I wanted to become more business savvy and this program helped me infinitely. Upon graduation a new position opened up at Stork Craft, and I fully understood the need for Stork Craft to become more of an online presence. I told the Executives that we needed to become well-known online and responsive to customers concerns. We needed to interact with our customers and listen to them. This is where I fit into the equation, and I have been working in this position since May 2009. I love it!

Wear Red for Haiti

Stork Craft's thoughts and prayers are with victims and families of the earthquake in Haiti. Last Thursday, certain Stork Craft employees dressed in red to show their support for the relief of this terrible disaster. Talia Beckett, Marketing Manager of Stork Craft, attended a charity event for Haiti that was organized by Rose Charities. There is so much need for help in Haiti and Stork Craft is trying to contribute to the relief effort. We will be organizing more in-office donations and encourage people to give to this most worthy cause.

Philanthropy expert Timothy Ogden says the best advice for corporate givers is: "Don't just do something, stand there." Allow him to explain

The news and images from Haiti are heartbreaking. Many individuals and companies are reaching for their wallets; others are wondering what they can do to help. But the best advice for corporate givers trying to figure out how best to respond is the old adage: "Don't just do something, stand there." To understand why, take a look back at the responses to other recent disasters. There is a discernable pattern, and not a good one:

1. Donations spike in the immediate aftermath.
2. A huge portion of the funds donated are spent on setting up disaster-relief operations that are no longer the primary need.
3. A flood of cash and materials cause a logistics nightmare leading to waste and ineffectiveness, if not corruption.
4. Six months later, reconstruction stalls because the world's attention has moved elsewhere.
5. And, finally, a series of reports bemoan the fact that too many funds are devoted to disaster relief and not enough to disaster preparedness and reconstruction.

Companies are in the perfect position to break this cycle: They have the ability (and the obligation) to be thoughtful and strategic about how they handle their charitable giving. Here are a few ways businesses can help—and some principles everyone can apply to post-disaster giving:

Don't earmark your donations for Haiti. Funds for disaster relief are absolutely necessary in the short term—but immediate relief efforts are just one part of a long recovery process. By the time money earmarked for disaster relief arrives in charities' bank accounts for a particular disaster, recovery workers have already moved on to the much harder, much more expensive rebuilding phase. Rather than earmark a gift for Haitian disaster relief, direct your donations toward replenishing the cash and materials that disaster-relief agencies will expend in the next few weeks in Haiti, so they will be ready to respond immediately to the next disaster.

Go with experience. If you feel that you must give to disaster relief in Haiti, make sure you are giving to an organization that has extensive experience in Haiti and people already on the ground. They will be much more effective because of their existing knowledge of communities, cultural norms, and power dynamics.

Give money. Gifts-in-kind may seem like an appealing and useful way to contribute but they tend to cause huge logistical problems that dramatically undermine their value. Money gives those responding to the disaster the ability to act flexibly, according to the needs at hand. If you do have materials you are convinced will be useful (construction supplies, computers, and so on) ask the charity your working with whether it can effectively use what you can give. (And be prepared to hear that they'd rather have the cash.)

Look ahead. Long after their immediate health and safety needs are taken care of and the media spotlight has moved on, Haitians will still benefit from your organization's help in rebuilding their lives and livelihoods. One way to do this—and engage employees and customers—is to match the dollars they contribute for immediate relief with a corporate gift for reconstruction, to be given in six or eight months. By that time it will be clear which areas of the rebuilding effort are underfunded. You'll also have time to thoroughly vet agencies, projects, and so forth, to ensure that your donations will do the most good.

Holiday Recap

Stork Craft's annual 'Holiday Lunch' took place this year at The Keg Steakhouse and Bar. Employees from the warehouse and office gathered together for some great food and drinks and an overall fun time! There were some great prizes raffled off, such as sunglasses, dvd players, toolsets and many more. Thanks to Jim and Ashley the day ran smoothly and nobody went home empty handed.

We have already processed and shipped out thousands of drop-side repair kits and have received confirmation that some customers have already received their parts. Again, the fastest way to request your repair kit is through our website as our phone lines are still being tied up with calls.

Im sorry that there is so much negative gossip about these cribs. Mine was put together correctly and I NEVER had any concerns, even after the brackets were recalled, I checked mine, they were fine, I ordered the new brackets, and that was that. I am so sorry to see these wonderful cribs coming off the market. I searched for a long time to find a retailer in Edmonton who carried it, and it is a shame other families are losing out on this amazing product.

JPMA Responds to Recent Safety Concerns of “Drop Side” Cribs

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. November 23, 2009 - To alleviate confusion that is in the media regarding the recently announced recall of certain drop-side cribs, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), the not for profit trade association that promotes infant safety and the development of recognized ASTM International product safety standards, reassures the public regarding the safety of properly used, drop side cribs.

All new cribs on the market today must meet minimum government requirements. In addition, there are consensus performance standards, which are established by ASTM with involvement of the government and recognized experts, to which JPMA certifies cribs and other durable infant products. JPMA also reminds parents and care givers, that when you assemble a crib to the manufacturer's instructions and use it properly, a crib provides the safest sleeping environment for baby.

Recent media reports notwithstanding, cribs are intended to last for years (or multiple births) when properly cared for. Crib instructions which are attached to cribs include information on assembly, maintenance, cleaning, storage and use.

“JPMA believes that instead of alarming parents, we should work together to educate them about the importance of the proper use, assembly and reassembly of cribs and how to provide the safest sleep environment for a child,” said Mike Dwyer, JPMA Executive Director. “The safest place for a child is in a fully functional, properly assembled crib. Parents are urged to closely inspect the hardware and stability of their cribs to ensure all parts are in place and secure when assembling and re-assembling cribs.”
The Consumer Products Safety Committee has NEVER said that a properly assembled crib with fully functional hardware should not be used. Each year hundreds of deaths occur when children are placed in a sleep environment that is not specifically designed for children. Parents should continue using properly assembled cribs in good condition as it provides the safest sleep environment for children.

JPMA suggests the following safety tips to sustain the proper lifespan of your crib:

 Parents should not use any crib with missing, broken or loose hardware parts. Crib slats or spindles should be spaced no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, and none should be loose or missing. Also NEVER use a crib with corner posts over 1/16 of an inch above the end panels (unless they’re over 16 inches high for a canopy).

 NEVER place infants to sleep on pillows, sofa cushions, adult beds, waterbeds, beanbags, or any other surface not specifically designed for infant sleep. NEVER place the crib near windows, draperies, blinds, or wall mounted decorative accessories with long cords.

 When using a drop side crib parents and care givers should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving parts operate properly. Parents should be sure that hardware is installed properly. When assembling and disassembling drop side cribs, parents should always confirm that the parts are reassembled following the manufacturers guidelines as listed in the instructions.

 Always check all sides and corners of the crib to assure proper assembly with no openings that may entrap a child. The crib mattress should fit snugly with no more than two fingers width, one-inch, between the edge of the mattress and the crib side. Otherwise, the baby can get trapped between the mattress and the side of the crib.

 Do not try to repair any side of the crib without manufacturer approved hardware.

 Putting a broken side up against the wall does not solve the problem and can often make it worse.

JPMA is pleased to note that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recognizes the importance of urging parents and caregivers to closely inspect the hardware and stability of their cribs to ensure all parts are in place and secure when assembling and re-assembling cribs.

Recent recalls of juvenile products highlights the importance of proper assembly and use of cribs. Many older cribs do not meet all current safety standards. Even if you are on a tight budget, you should not purchase an old crib at a garage sale or accept a hand-me-down crib that may not meet current Federal and ASTM standards.

Dear Stork Craft customers,

This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.

This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004

We’re currently working through the initial surge of inquiries and requests at the moment. It is very busy here and we are doing our best to meet the demand. Requests for conversion repair clips require the following information:

-model number of your crib
-the date of manufacture
-the country of manufacture
-complete shipping information

All of these can be found on the bottom right corner of the mattress baseboard (under the mattress).

This recall is in place because the crib’s drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing causing the drop-side to detach. A crib with any of the four corners detached can lead to a safety issue.

The cribs involved in the serious incidents that the CPSC and Health Canada have documented had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, of flexible tabs stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down. The conversion clips will essentially render the drop-side immovable.

Canwood Furniture, currently available on walmart.com, has been a huge success since Stork Craft purchased and relaunched this furniture line. I thought that with the increasing interest for Canwood products that I could answer some of your frequently asked questions:

1) When will Canwood be available in Canada?
Canwood will be available in BC by the end of November and it can be found at McKenzie’s Countrywide, Totem Furniture, Northern Furniture and TJ’s the Kiddies store. As for the rest of the country, it should be available by January 2010. Stay tuned to this blog for more details on which retailers will carry Canwood in Canada when the information becomes available.

2) What type of wood is Canwood made with?
Canwood Furniture is made of pine.

3) What is the weight limit for a Canwood Loft Bed or Bunk Bed?
The maximum weight for a Canwood Loft Bed or Bunk Bed is 165 lbs.

4) How high is the Whistler Junior Loft Bed from the floor to the bottom of the bed?
28-7/8" from the floor to the underside of the bed rail.

5) Do I need a boxspring for my Canwood bed?
A box spring is not required, though one can be used in the Twin Bed configuration. A box spring cannot be used in the upper bed of a bunk or a loft bed configuration as it would raise the mattress up above the guard rails.

I have to admit that this is my first ever experience blogging. When I was hired by Stork Craft back in May, creating a Stork Craft Blog and signing us up for Facebook and Twitter accounts were only a small part of my job description. Things started slow....really slooooooooooooooooooow. If I remember correctly, Stork Craft only had 4 followers of this blog in the first month of its existence (one of them being myself).

Being new to the 'Social Media World' I was discouraged with the lack of instant results. Why weren't more people reading our blog? I kept telling myself that I had to be patient and that eventually the readers will come. Being one of the the world's largest baby furniture manufacturers in the world, I knew we had the customer base. But did the customers know that Stork Craft was finally online and ready to connect with them?

Through contests and other Mommy Blogs being extremely helpful with tips and referrals (Dee at Twoofakind, Jolly Mom, Barefoot Mommies and J Leigh Designz) we have finally achieved a strong reader base for this blog, on Facebook and Twitter. While we certainly have a ways to go before I will be fully satisfied with the Social Media Department here at Stork Craft, I can safely say that there is nothing that I enjoy more at work than interacting and connecting with customers and fans of Stork Craft online. Whether it be a simple email asking me questions about new products, or comments on our blog, or tweets on Twitter, or thumbs up on Facebook, the feeling that I get from responding to customers is one of satisfaction and gratitude.
